Atherton War Memorial

Atherton War Memorial is situated at the junction of Leigh Road and Hamilton Street. Atherton Cemetery is a short distance away. On Saturday 12th. January 1922 the memorial was dedicated and an ex-serviceman, Private J. Roylance who had served with the 1st./5th. Manchester Regiment during the Great War was called upon to unveil the memorial. Private Roylance had been 'Blinded' as a result of his injuries sustained during that conflict. Dedicated to the memory of those who enlisted from the local community and made the supreme sacrifice.
