IT WAS only a chance remark but it set the community of Barnham off on a journey into the past to discover more about the local men who fell in the First World War and now there is no stopping them. ‘It all started 18 months ago when I was cleaning the church memorial and couldn’t reach the top,’ says self- supporting minister the Revd Sue Nutt. ‘Paul Allen came to help and said he had started researching people linked with WWI. Out of a population of just 425 in this small village on the Duke of Grafton’s estate near Elvedon, 70 men - mostly estate workers - went to serve in the war and 19 lost their lives. Two of those young men had emigrated but returned to fight, one gaining the Military Medal for bravery. Both listed their mothers in Barnham as next of kin. The remaining 17 were their childhood friends, aged just 19 to 41. Karen Burton, an historian and active member of the church, has produced a map showing the village families as they were during WWI. Several families lost more than one son. Karen, Paul and Sue are part of a core group trying to form a coherent picture of what life must have been like a century ago. Joining them are Euston Estate achivist Edward Wortley, Peter Hicks, whose father was wounded four times in WWI, and A-level history teacher Nicky McConnell. Such has been the interest, that 44 people from the village are setting off the weekend after Easter to visit WWI battlefields and major Commonwealth War Grave Commission cemeteries including Tyne Cot near Ypres and Thiepval on the Somme where they will take part in a short service and wreath laying. The church also plans to host an exhibition from 3 August until early September on those who served from Barnham and others whose families now live in the village.
