William Downing (Born in 1865 in Bickerton, Yorkshire) had 9 children, two of whom, Harry & Herbert, were killed in action in the First World War. Their younger brother, Arthur, also served during the war, in the Durham Light Infantry, although he never went abroad. William was a Constable with the Leeds Police, and was due to retire in March 1916. He turned down his retirement at that point and agreed to stay in the Police Force until the end of the war.
