Tea Club and Barrovian Society

Tea Club and Barrovian Society

In 1911 J.R.R. Tolkien and three friends, Robert Gilson, Geoffrey Bache Smith and Christopher Wiseman, formed a semi-secret society called the Tea Club and Barrovian Society, alluding to their fondness for drinking tea in Barrow's Stores near their school and, secretly, in the school library. All four served in WW1; Robert and Geoffrey were both killed in action.
