The 9th County of London Territorial Regiment, Queen Victoria’s Rifles were formed on 1 April 1908 when volunteer regiments were reorganised into the new Territorial Force. The QVRs were on their way to their summer Camp when war was declared and they were embodied into the Army on 4th August 1914, mustering at their HQ in Davies Street. They arrived in Le-Harve on 5th November 1914 and were one of the first Territorial battalions to serve in France. On 17th April 1915, they participated in an attack to capture Hill 60, overlooking the Ypres Salient. The Hill was captured and on 20 April, the QVRs were ordered up to the front line as the enemy made a counter attack. The company commanders were killed and Lieutenant G Harold Woolley took command. Only 40 QVRs were left in the front line, but rallying the troops, Woolley helped repulse the Counter attack by throwing bombs. For his gallantry Lieutenant Woolley was awarded the Victoria Cross, the first to be won by the Territorial Force. The QVR’s remained in France for the rest of the war. They suffered heavy losses at the Battle of Gommecourt on 1st July 1916. They are remembered at Hill 60 by the QVR memorial.
