Bury Grammar School in Lancashire lost 97 former pupils in the Great War; over 600 old boys are known to have served. Of these, two subsequently died in the Second World War. The school has been involved in researching and commemorating its dead from both world wars and other conflicts for a number of years, primarily in connection with its annual battlefield tour, which has run successfully since 1994. For the Great War Centenary, the school has planned a number of special events spanning the four years of the conflict. A Centenary Roll of Honour, part of the school's new Archives website, will be updated on the anniversary of each old boy's death; a series of special assemblies and displays will be held to mark the school's connections with campaigns such as Gallipoli and the Somme. The annual battlefield tour will mark each year of the conflict with itineraries focussing on the experiences of old boys. The History and Art Departments are collaborating on a special project, inspired by the poppy installation at the Tower of London, to create a permanent ceramic memorial to the old boys of the school who died. Mark Hone, the Head of History and Politics as well as School Archivist, is always delighted to hear from anyone who has information about the old boys of the school who served in the Great War, both those who died and those who survived.
