The 15th (Service) Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers The 1st Salford Pals
The 1st Salford Pals Battalion. During the evening of Thursday the 3rd of September 1914 the Salford Hippodrome on Cross Lane hosted the crucial recruitment meeting which established The Salford Pals Battalions. The Battalions existence was established on Wednesday the 9th of September five weeks after the outbreak of war, 1.500 joined the colours, Lord Derby accepted the role of Honary Colonel. By the 9th of October the 1st Salford Pals Battalion had over 850 recruits. Each recruit in the 1st Salford Pals Battalion was paid a shilling a day together with two shillings a day for food whilst the Battalion remained in Salford, making a weekly income of one guinea it was a luxury for some. The Salford Pals Battalions were recruited from, Irlam, Eccles, Patricroft, Swinton and Worsley and of course Salford, Broughton and Walkden.
