18 children died on 13 June 1917 in the first daytime air raid when a bomb dropped from one of the 20 Gotha GI.V bombers on a raid over London fell through the school roof and exploded in the infants' classroom. This community remembers these little civilian casualties of WW1, who are commemorated on three memorials - one in the East London Cemetery, one on the site of their former school, and one in Poplar Recreation Ground, East India Dock Road. 15 of the children are buried in a mass grave at the East London Cemetery; the exceptions are Louise A Acompora and John P Brennan ( St Patrick's Cemetery, Leytonstone) and Grace Jones (Abney Park Cemetery)
