Remembering the lives of people commemorated on the WW1 memorial in Burwash, East Sussex, and/or on the Roll of Honour inside the church there. Those commemorated by this memorial included John Kipling, the son of the poet Rudyard Kipling, who was posted as missing in the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Loos, and not confirmed killed until three years later. In 1917 Rudyard Kipling was appointed a member of the Imperial War Graves Commission. He approved all, and composed many, of the epitaphs used by the Commission on its memorials, and wrote pamphlets explaining the policy of the Commission and helped to defend its work in Parliamentary debates. Responsible for the language used for memorial inscriptions, he is attributed with the use of the phrases "Their Name Liveth for Evermore" on numerous memorials (including the Burwash one), and "A Soldier of the Great War known unto God" on CWGC gravestones. The Burwash memorial is very unusual because of the lantern on top which is lit on the anniversary of the deaths of every man commemorated.
