Voluntary Aid Detachment Hants 186 & Minley Hospital

VAD detachment Hants 186 was the Farnborough Detachment. Minley Auxiliary Military Hospital under Aldershot Command opened on 21 Sep 1914 with 36 beds taking patients from Connaught and Cambridge Hospitals. The Commandant was Mrs Laurence Currie. The Curries met all expenses for the hospital, except the normal capitation charge which was met by Sir L Phillips Bart. Over 100 operations had been performed by Dr Wilfed Balgarnie at Tylney Hall, but when that hospital closed an operating theatre was set up at Minley and he continued working there specialising in operations and electrical and orthopedic treathments. He was supported by Dr Chubb. The hospital was established in Minley Lodge, a grand house on the estate of Minley Manor. It had previousy been leased from the Curries by Sir Arthur Godley, the longest serving Permanant Undersecretary for India, and cousin of the General Officer Commanding the New Zealand Expediitionary Force.
