The surname 'Evershed' is first recorded in Sussex, England, in the 13th Century, with Thomas de Everesheved. It is believed that all living Eversheds are descended from six men who lived in the early 1700's, William the Preacher, William of Cranley, Thomas of Penfold, John of Honeylane, Richard of Pallingham and another William Evershed. Thirteen Evershed men died during the Great War, including three of the four sons of Sarah Jane Evershed.
