Authors of fiction about the War and the 1920's

A number of popular authors during and after the War took as their theme the way men who had served sometimes found themselves lacking adventure and excitement with the onset of Peace; "Sapper" with 'Bulldog Drummond', John Buchan with 'Richard Hannay', W. E. Johns with 'Biggles', and "Dornford Yates" with 'Richard Chandos' wrote successful thrillers or semi-autobiographical works - all which are very much of their time, and often not 'politically correct'. Others, like "Taffrail" and "Ian Hay" described everyday Service life. Men who served were not the only authors, of course - Dorothy L. Sayers' fictional hero Lord Peter Wimsey had a D.S.O. and shellshock, and Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot was introduced to us by the wounded Captain Hastings as he convalesced at Styles.
