E13 ran aground on a Danish island while attempting to enter the Baltic Sea between Malmo and Copenhagen. A gyrocompass failure was blamed. At first light E13 was discovered and a tense situation developed between Danish torpedo boats seeking to enforce Danish neutrality, and German TBs seeking to destroy E13. The subsequent German attack on 19 August 1915 in which half the crew of E13 were killed, was regarded as a breach of Danish neutrality. The remainder of the crew of E13 were interned in Denmark and the badly damaged submarine was eventually scrapped. The Captain and 1st Lieutenant both escaped from internment and returned to England. This Community includes fifteen members of the crew of E15 who were killed together with the fifteen who were interned and survived.
