The 16th (Service) Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. The 2nd Salford Pals
The 16th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers the 2nd Salford Pals Battalion was raised on the 5th of November 1914, their headquarters being established in Broughton Town Hall, Two of the Battalion companies were associated with close knit communities on the outskirts of Salford, one coming from Eccles and a further company primarily from Swinton, Pendlebury and Clifton on the west of the Borough. Major C. M. Abercrombie was promoted from his post with the 1st Salford Pals to become it's first Commanding Officer of the 2nd Salford Pals.
