Recipients of Prisoner of War (escapee) awards

Recipients of Prisoner of War (escapee) awards

Army Order 193 of 1919 permitted the retrospective granting of gallantry awards for services in captivity; this community tries to bring together the recipients. The Army Order clearly recognised that many acts of gallantry and devotion to duty had previously gone unrecognised, because they were unwitnessed, or because those who had witnessed them were prisoners of war. It allowed rewards for services in the Field, some of which were awarded two or more years after the action being recognised, and for services whilst a Prisoner of War.
