HM Submarine E24

HM Submarine E24

This community collects the Life Stories of the 35 crew of HM Submarine E24, which struck a mine in the North Sea. On the morning of 21st March 1916 E24 sailed from Harwich for mine-laying operations in the Heligoland Bight. The submarine failed to return from this operation and was believed to have struck a mine. In 1974 her hull was mistakenly salvaged, inspection of the hull indicated that the submarine had indeed hit a mine. The remains of 26 of the complement of 35 were found in the wreck; only Lt Cmdr Naper was identified, being taller than the others and by the 2 and a half gold rings on his sleeve. They were all interred in the Ohlsdorf Cemetery, Hamburg, where there is a memorial stone to the 25 crew and another to the Commander. Artefacts from E24 and her crew are on display at the Wrackmuseum Duhnen Cuxhaven. There is a memorial to Lt Cmdr Naper and the crew of HM Submarine E24 at Sullington in Sussex; please see the community ‘Sullington Memorial and the Naper family’ for further information.
