The Medal of the Order of the British Empire (MOBE) was established in 1917 and was awarded for either meritorious service or for gallantry. This community aims to gather the many women who received such honours for their work in the First World War. Many of them were munitions workers or telephonists caught in emergency situations. Others were members of Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps, serving either at home or abroad. Often there are portraits to go along with the life stories found here, and details jotted on the backs. Please note that a separate community exists for women appointed Dame Grand Cross (GBE), Dame Commander (DBE), Commander (CBE), Officer (OBE), and Member (MBE) of the Order of the British Empire. It can be viewed here: https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/community/2557. If you know of someone who belongs in any of these communities, please get in touch with your information.
