Barnsley - St John's Barebones, Memorial Tablet (BAR32) and Men from the Parish

This memorial no longer exists (as far as we know). St John's Church was demolished in the 1960s and the congregation moved to St Peter's on Doncaster Road. It took the form of an "oak tablet at the west end of the church" according to the Barnsley Chronicle on 24 September 1921 and with 140 names it can't have been small. What did they do with it? Stories abound but we are no closer to finding a definitive answer. The parish of St John's was full of densely packed small houses, mostly now demolished. Many families had multiple members serving in WW1. http://barnsleywarmemorials.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/st-johns-church-barnsley-oak-memorial.html ------------ In October 2016 a replacement tablet was blessed in St Peter's Church on Doncaster Road, it lists the names found in the newspaper article from 1921. --------- If you are having trouble adding information to men in this Community on Lives of the First World War I would be happy to help. ----- Linda Hutton IWM Volunteer barnsleyhistorian@gmail.com
