Devil's Porridge in Timbertown - Gretna Munitions Workers

Remembering the WW1 contribution of munitions workers at HM Factory Gretna. Located in Southern Scotland next to the Solway Firth in Dumfries and Galloway, and described as “the biggest factory in the world”, it was 9 miles long, 2 miles wide, and stretched from Eastriggs in the west, past Gretna, and across to Longtown in the east. (The townships of Gretna and Eastriggs were built to house the munitions workers of HM Factory Gretna.) Munitions production at the purpose-built factory started in April 1916, and by 1917 the factory was employing 11,576 women and 5,966 men, producing 1,100 tons of cordite per week, more than all the other munitions plants in Britain combined. At it's peak it employed over 30,000 workers, who had travelled there from all over the UK. Cordite production ceased following the end of WW1, and shortly afterwards the manufacturing plants were demolished.
