Barclays Group Archives hold a set of 3 small photograph albums from the early 1900s showing staff of Barclays Bank head office at 54 Lombard Street “at work and play”. One of those photographs, taken in Colchester, shows a group of 5 soldiers in their Royal Fusiliers uniforms, and their names are written in the album above and below the photograph. John Louis Stobbs was awarded the Military Cross. His sister was married to Sydney Hampson, who was wounded and discharged from the Army in 1918. Their colleagues in the group are Cecil Higham, George C Thomson, and D Alexander. D Alexander is the only one whose identity has not yet been confirmed for certain. Since the other 4 men were all employees of Barclays Bank at Lombard Street prior to enlistment in the 10th (Stockbrokers) Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers, it is assumed that he was also in that battalion, although it is not certain that he was employed by Barclays too. This community remembers and re-unites the five men. Further information about the people in this community may also be available in the Barclays Group Archives. See https://www.archive.barclays.com/ for further information, including their contact details.
