WW1 diary of Ernest Cockburn of Ramsgate

WW1 diary of Ernest Cockburn of Ramsgate

In 2006 Michael's Bookshop in Ramsgate published the original manuscript of the personal diary of Ernest Frank Cockburn. He lived with his family at Glenthorne, Elms Avenue, Ramsgate throughout most of WW1. Cockburn records in great detail the almost continuous bombing and shelling of Ramsgate. He was Secretary and Accountant of the Westgate-on-Sea Gas and Water Companies. At the beginning of the war he was sworn in as a Special Constable. In 1915 he signed up as required by the Derby Scheme. His company had applied for conditional exemption, and this was granted before the Tribunal on 30 May 1916. All his male staff had been called-up and he records their replacement with female staff. He names the death and wounding of his former employees, and many other military personnel in Ramsgate. I will attempt to add the LifeStories of all these, but will concentrate on creating LifeStories for the 45 persons which the Thanet Advertiser claimed were killed by the 396 bombs and 343 shells aimed at the civilian population of Thanet district.
