Jasin / Jassin / Jassini, south of Mombasa, was a German frontier town which was captured by British Empire forces in January 1915 after the disastrously incompetent failure of the seaborne attack on Tanga in November 1914; four companies, about 300 men, of the Jind Infantry and the 2nd Kashmir Rifles were left to garrison Jasin. Both these units were local State forces who had been offered for Imperial Service. On the 18th January they were attacked by a German force of two thousand men in nine companies of Schutztruppe led by von Lettow-Vorbeck; despite a resolute defence even after the ammunition ran out, the vastly superior German force with four field guns was victorious, although with greater casualties, so worrying that von Lettow-Vorbeck never again deliberately attacked a fortified position. This Community commemorates all those who fought at Jasin, but for lack of information mainly includes the named 62 (out of at least 74?) Indian soldiers who were killed and who are remembered on the screen wall of the CWGC Cemetery at Tanga. Many more were killed, wounded or captured, but their names, like their burial places, are unknown or difficult to find.
