As well as M.P.s who served, I've also included members of the various wartime Governments; although they have often been derided, many of them had personal experience of the War. Asquith's son Raymond was killed in 1916, Lloyd-George's daughter Olwen served as a VAD, Kitchener was killed when H.M.S. Hampshire hit a mine. After the Gallipoli debacle, which was one of the oft-quoted examples of 'civilian interference', Churchill left Government and served in the Army. It is also worth noting the number of Irish Nationalist leaders who served; as Thomas Michael Kettle said when he enlisted after the invasion of Belgium, "to fight not for England but for all small nations."
