122nd Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery

122nd Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery

122nd Heavy Battery was formed at Woolwich on the 17th October 1914 and went to France on the 8th March 1915. The Battery was equipped with (obsolete) 4.7 inch guns until these were replaced by the very capable 60 pounder gun in December 1915. This is one of the few units to have left a record of its nominal roll, as at the date it went to France. I have updated this initial list of some 200 names with subsequently recorded changes (casualties, postings - in and out etc.) up to around July 1916. This list is now some 400 strong and I intend to write and publish the Battery's history in due course. I hope to add as many of their names to this Community - as fast as time allows - and to include as many individual stories as possible. Please add details of any individual, whom you know served in the Battery, to this Community and contact me at [email protected] to either learn more about their War, or for help in confirming whether or not they served in the Battery. The Battery was Mentioned in Dispatches on three occasions and was by all accounts extremely highly regarded. It took part in fighting at Armentieres, the Second Battle of Ypres, Hooge, the Bluff, St Elois, the Somme, Bullecourt (in the ANZAC Corps), Messines, the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele), the German March Offensive and the 100 Days Advance to Victory.
