Humble Street Heroes - 300 Soldiers from 150 Houses in a Dingy London Suburb

The name of this community is taken from a headline in the Daily Mirror on 20th October 1916, about the unveiling of a street shrine in Trafalgar Street in Walworth. Beneath the headline, the article said ... "The Mayor of Southwark, Mr F W Ward, unveiled yesterday a roll of honour in Trafalgar-street, Walworth, to the memory of those who have left the street for active service. There are few streets in London that have not contributed their quota to the war. The contribution of Trafalgar-street has been a heavy one - heavier than that of most streets. From its 150 houses over 300 soldiers have gone. Yesterday Trafalgar-street put on gala attire. It was brilliant with bunting. Flags fluttered from every window. The roll of honour consists of two tablets, on which are engraved the names of the men now on active service. There is a third tablet. It is to the memory of those who have finished fighting. At the close of the ceremony the mayor drove to a house where an invalid mother is living. She was prevented by illness from seeing the tablet. She has lost a son at the front." Details of the shrine are at http://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/47510 . The shrine has long been lost, so this community seeks to re-create it as a permanent digital memorial - not just up to October 1916, but to include all those from the street who served at any time during WW1.
