H.M. Submarine E5
H.M. Submarine E5 was the first British submarine to fire a torpedo in WW1, and vanished in March 1916. She was thought to have struck a mine near Heligoland Blight while rescuing survivors from a stricken trawler. In 2016 the remarkably intact wreck of the E5 was found by divers, off the island of Schiermonnikoog. Her hatches were open, suggesting that the crew had tried to escape. There was no sign of damage to the hull of the submarine, indicating that it had not sunk as a result of enemy action.
