Owing to the colour bar of the British military services at the beginning of the war, the only option available was for West Indians living in Canada to enlist with the CEF, who did not operate such a bar. This community consists of both black and white servicemen and women. It is true that many of those who enlisted were from the white colonial families, but the widely-held view that black soldiers were only used as labourers in France is wrong; the British West Indies Regiment fought against the Turks with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force, under the command of New Zealand Forces. Incorporates Bermuda.
