Barclays Bank Companies Men - Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) - Tyne Cot Cemetery and Memorial

The Third Battle of Ypres, commonly known as the Battle of Passchendaele, took place from 31st July 1917 to 10th November 1917. Specific battles included Messines (7–14 Jun), Pilckem Ridge (31 Jul – 2 Aug), Langemarck (16–18 Aug), Menin Road Ridge (20–25 Sep), Polygon Wood (26 Sep – 3 Oct), Broodseinde (4 Oct), Poelcappelle (9 Oct), the First Battle of Passchendaele (12 Oct) and the Second Battle of Passchendaele (26 Oct – 10 Nov). Tyne Cot Cemetery, which bears witness to the ferocious battle, is the largest Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in the world in terms of burials. There are 11,961 Commonwealth servicemen buried there, of whom more than 8,300 remain unidentified. The site also contains the Tyne Cot Memorial Wall to the Missing, which commemorates nearly 35,000 servicemen from the United Kingdom and New Zealand who died on the Ypres Salient after 16th August 1917 and whose graves are not known. This community remembers the lives of employees of Barclays Bank and their constituent banks who were killed at the Third Battle of Ypres, and are buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery or commemorated on the Memorial Wall to the Missing there. [The constituent banks included are Lancashire & Yorkshire Bank, Bank of Liverpool & Martins (including Bank of Liverpool, Martins Bank, Cattle Trade Bank, Cocks Biddulph & Co, Equitable Bank, Halifax Commercial Banking Co, and Palatine Bank), London & Provincial Bank, London & South Western Bank, Union Bank of Manchester, and United Counties Bank.] Detailed information about the battle is available at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Passchendaele . n.b. CWGC are seeking descendants of those killed at this battle, who are invited to apply to attend 2017 commemorative events.
