14th King George's Own Ferozepore Sikhs at Gallipoli

Those who served with the 14th Sikhs at Gallipoli; the Battalion landed at 'V' Beach, Cape Helles on 1st May 1915 as part of the 29th Indian Brigade. They suffered 78 casualties before they had been in the front line two days, their main actions were at Gurkha Bluff / Gully Ravine on 13th May, the Third Battle of Krithia at Gully Ravine on 14th June (suffering 12 British officers out of 15, 11 Indian officers out of 14 and 380 men out of 514 dead and wounded), and Gully Ravine in the first week of July (92 casualties). By 6th July the Battalion was reduced to two officers and 117 men. After rest and further reinforcement at Imbros, they fought at Sari Bair on 8th August (153 casualties), lost 81 more drowned when the tranport Ramzan carrying drafts from India was torpedoed and sunk on 19th September, and finally left Gallipoli on 14th December. 3 men of the Battalion received the Indian Order of Merit, and 38 more the Indian Distinguished Service Medal, for gallantry.
