By 1917 one name had became virtually synonymous with the futility and catastrophe of the Great War : Ypres. At some point in almost every units history there was an occasion when they passed through the terrible Salient. It caused only heartache to the men unfortunate enough to be there. And within the many battles, small and large, which were fought out around the city of Ypres, in four years of stalemate, none grew to have a more oppressive and sinister ring to the British publics ear than that of Paschendaele. This community page is dedicated to 8th,9th,11th,16th,17th,18th and 19th, 22nd Manchester Regiment Battalions that fought in the Third Battle of Ypres and Paschendaele.
