HM Australian Submarine AE1

HM Australian Submarine AE1

AE1 was commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy on 28 Feb 1914 and left UK in company with HMAS AE2 reaching Australia on 24 May 1914. At the start of WW1, HMAS AE1 was engaged, along with AE2, in the capture of German New Guinea. On 14 Sep 1914 she departed Rabaul, New Guinea for a patrol but failed to return that evening. After many years of searching, the wreck was finally discovered in December 2017 off the Duke of York islands, Papua New Guinea. HMAS AE1 is commemorated at http://www.navy.gov.au/hmas-ae1 This community includes all 35 members of the mixed RN and RAN crew lost in AE1.
