Halifax Explosion, Dec 6, 1917 - Remembrance from a variety of resources

The initial resource used for this community was the Remembrance Book, the official register of Explosion fatalities. When the register was closed in December 1918, it contained 1,631 entries. Full details of the fire and explosion aboard munition ship, Mont Blanc are at https://maritimemuseum.novascotia.ca/what-see-do/halifax-explosion/halifax-explosion-infosheet. Mont-Blanc with her cargo of high explosives was en route from New York via Halifax to Bordeaux, France. She collided at low speed with the unladen Imo, chartered to pick up a cargo of relief supplies in New York. The resulting fire aboard the French ship rapidly became out of control. Approximately 20 minutes later the Mont-Blanc exploded. The blast was the largest man-made explosion prior to the development of nuclear weapons, releasing the equivalent energy of roughly 2.9 kilotons of TNT. The community also remembers the highly disciplined members of C.E.F. and others who were instrumental in coordinating relief efforts. The crew of HMCS Niobe, a Canadian Navy Depot ship made a valiant and tragic effort to avert the tragedy and men with a link to the ship and its history are also remembered.
