102nd Field Ambulance

102nd Field Ambulance

A Field Ambulance was a semi-mobile military unit providing medical care to sick and wounded close to the front line, with the purpose of either returning them to duty or evacuating them to Casualty Clearing Stations. A Field Ambulance typically comprised 10 Royal Army Medical Corps officers (Doctors) and around 220 other ranks from both RAMC and Army Service Corps. 102nd Field Ambulance mobilized in early January 1916 and deployed to France on 12 Jan 1916. After a month of shadowing 69th Field Ambulance, they took over duties from them at Fort Rompu near Armentieres. Between May 1916 and August 1916, the unit moved to the Somme, establishing a Field Ambulance and Divisional Rest Station at Franvillers. In August 1916, the unit returned to Fort Rompu, remaining there until the end of January 1917. This community aims to include all those officers and men who served on the strength of the Field Ambulance during this period. The major source of information has been the War Diary WO95/2452.
