This community began with the ten names on the memorial tablet on the wall of the Memorial Hall in Stourton near Mere in Wiltshire. The stables adjoining the Spread Eagle Hotel were converted into the present Memorial Hall and opened with a concert on April 21st 1919. An inscription over the doorway records that the hall was erected in memory of those who gave their lives in the First World War. The ten are: Frederick Broomfield; William Thomas Chaldecott; William John Green; William Henry Creene; Henry Colt Arthur Hoare; Hubert Thomas John Keevil; Thomas Joseph Keevil; Robert George Maidment; John Charles (Jack) Pyne; Edgar Eustace Watson. To these have been added a further eight men and one woman identified by the website ‘Wiltshire Soldiers’ (run by Richard Broadhead) as having an association with Stourton. In most cases, they were born nearby and stayed for varying lengths of time. In addition, three men of particular interest who served and survived are also included: Frederick Fowler DCM, Harry Hoare’s soldier-servant; CPO Edward S Keevil, brother of two of the men lost, who also served in the Second World War; Ebenezer Stone, who overcame severe injury to raise a family. The Stourhead Estate extends for a large area around Stourton village; at the time of the First World War it was owned by the Hoare family. The loss of their son ‘Harry’ Hoare in the War was the principal reason for transferring the house and much of the Estate to the National Trust.
