Chichester - The Lancastrian School Roll of Honour

Chichester - The Lancastrian School Roll of Honour

The lives of those who were staff or pupils at the Lancastrian School for Boys in Chichester, West Sussex. This school was originally opened in Tower Street, Chichester, in 1810 as an all age school for boys. Despite its title, it was not specifically non-conformist. Shortly after becoming a Council School, the school moved into new buildings at Orchard Street in 1910. On 1st October 1931 the school became the Lancastrian Council Senior Boys School, and in 1951 moved to a site at Kingsham Farm. By 1971 the school merged with the Chichester High School for Boys. 465 boys and masters served in WW1, and 100 of them died. Recently a small photograph album was found in the loft of a deceased member of staff, amongst family memorabilia, which did not contain pictures, but a “Roll of Honour - 1914 / 1918 War”. This handwritten book, listed the names of pupils and staff who had attended the school and had volunteered and enlisted. The information was supplemented, in some cases, by their rank, regiment and whether or not they had died during WW1. A transcript of that book can be read at https://chichesterinthegreatwar.files.wordpress.com/2016/09/the-great-war-roll-of-honour-by-graham-dewsall.pdf
