Lives of the First World War

In the IWM Catalogue there is a photograph [Q 18341] of some of the many older sailors who were serving during WW1. The names in the IWM file are mostly correct but a few don't correspond with Navy Records. From their dates and records it seems this photo was taken at HMS Ganges, at Shotley circa 1917. This community is an attempt to find the men in the photo and show what I believe to be the correct sailors. A group of old sailors who were still serving. Barry, aged 57 (joined 1876) [James Berry 97196], - (Front Row): Petty Officer J. Stone, aged 50 (joined 1884) [most likely match James Stone 140634], Petty Officer W.B. Clarke, aged 54 (joined 1880) [William Battersby Clarke 111862], Petty Officer G. Emmerson, aged 58 (joined 1875) [George Emmerson 90926], Petty Officer F. Hunt, aged 48 (joined 1885)[most likely match Frederick George Hunt 138998], Petty Officer F. Goss, aged 51 (joined 1881)[Frederick Goss 117425], Chief Petty Officer C. Mace, aged 56 (joined 1878)[Charles Mace 103559], Chief Petty Officer E. Hanbury, aged 56 (joined 1877) [Edwin Stanbury 102085]. Many older Navy men were either still serving or recalled from the coastguard or civilian professions during the war but as the Navy seeding documents only start at 1900 they had to be added to the site manually and many remain missing from this memorial.
