New Zealand Maori Contingent

New Zealand Maori Contingent

The Maori Contingent, later the Maori Pioneer Battalion, served as part of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Around, 2227 Māori and 458 Pacific Islanders served and of these, 336 died on active service and 734 were wounded. Other Māori enlisted (and died) in other units. Details above from New Zealand Government website at https://nzhistory.govt.nz/war/maori-units-nzef. Some wounded or sick Maori were referred to the New Zealand Convalescent Hospital in Hornchurch, Essex. Those service men who died, including some from the island of Niue, are buried in war graves at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery, Hornchurch, or within the churchyard of the parish church of St. Andrews. This community also includes men who are listed in 'The Maoris in the Great War' by James Cowan. This was originally published in 1926 by the Maori Regimental Committee. The book lists not only those who lost their lives but also a list of honours and awards gained by members of the N.Z. Pioneer Battalion. This project closed before I was able to complete individual lives and add the relevent nominals to each man's profile. The men of the N.Z. Pioneer Battalion were awarded many instances of the following: D.S.O, M.C., DCM., M.M., M.S.M.,M.H.S., Croix de Guerre (French and Belgian), Serbian Order of the White Eagle, B.M. (Italian decoration) and of course those who were Mentioned in Dispatches.
