RMS Balantia Dec 1915 Citizens’ Contingent (2nd)
The Barbados Citizens’ Contingent Committee was formed about the end of November 1915, and the original promoters of the movement were Messrs Dudley G Leacock, FAC Collymore and RG Cave. A similar committee was set up in Trinidad. The primary object of the Committees was to enable men of respectable parentage to proceed from the West Indies to England to join His Majesty’s Forces – either the Royal Navy or English fighting regiments, and thus to take their part in the Great War. The majority of those from Trinidad enlisted with the Devonshire Regiment. The ship left Trinidad/Barbados on 29/30 December and arrived at Tilbury Docks, England on 17 January 1916.
