On 13 June 1917 the Hooley Hill Rubber and Chemical Works in Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire caught fire and exploded. The factory was engaged in the production of TNT for the war effort and was completely destroyed. 46 people from the immediate area, including schoolchildren, were killed but it was not possible to identify everyone at the time.
