Kamall Athon Chunchie was born in Ceylon to a Muslim family and served in the British Army in France and Salonika. Discharged in 1919 he found work in London and married Mabel Williams Tappen the following year. Having converted to Christianity whilst recuperating in Malta during the war, in 1926 Kamall became the first pastor and warden of The Coloured Men's Institute, a centre for social, welfare and religious activities.
