RMS Barima April 1916 Barbados Citizens' Contingent

RMS Barima April 1916 Barbados Citizens' Contingent

The Barbados Citizens’ Contingent Committee was formed about the end of November 1915, and the original promoters of the movement were Messrs Dudley G Leacock, FAC Collymore and RG Cave. The primary object of the Committee was to enable men of respectable parentage to proceed from the West Indies to England to join His Majesty’s Forces – either the Royal Navy or English fighting regiments, and thus to take their part in the Great War. Travelling from Trinidad via Barbados the ship arrived in London on 28 April 1916. There were also seven stowaways from Trinidad between the ages of 17 and 21, who instead of being prosecuted, were directed to the Stratford Recruiting Office: Cyril Blake, Lawrence Lane, George Emanuel, Christopher Josephs, Norman Monroe, Leonel Ewing, Charles Hedley. Still to find: AF Watson RGA (possibly Arthur Frederick), SA Miller, D Layne.
