Life stories discovered via the WW1 memoir And We Go On, by Will R. Bird. Bird was born in Nova Scotia and attempted to enlist when war first broke out, but was rejected because of bad teeth. After his brother Stephen was killed in action in 1915, he tried to enlist again, wanting to take Stephen's place on the battlefield. Successful this time, he served in France and Belgium for two years with the 42nd Battalion, Black Watch of Canada, and afterwards wrote about his experiences. He went on to write fifteen novels, as well as several history and travel books. War and grief were regular themes in his writing; in WW2, his only son, named Stephen like his brother, was killed in action. This community remembers Will Bird, as well as brothers who served, and the men he writes about in his memoir.
