At the outbreak of WW1, the 2nd Loyal North Lancs were based in India. They had been there for several years -- in 1911 they were at Ghorpuri Barracks in Poona. They sailed from Mumbai on 16 October 1914 as part of Indian Expeditionary Force "B", destined for East Africa. On 3 November 1914, they landed on the coast near the port of Tanga as part of what turned out to be an overly ambitious plan to take control of German East Africa. Later described as "the action of a lunatic", the Battle of Tanga on 4 November 1914 resulted in major losses of men (817 dead, wounded or missing) and equipment (including 8 machine-guns, 455 rifles and 500,000 rounds of ammunition). It is believed that 115 soldiers of the 2nd Loyal North Lancs were lost but only 51 are buried in the two CWGC cemeteries at Tanga. The British official history of the campaign described the Battle of Tanga as "one of the most notable failures in British military history". There is a full account of the Battle in Chapter 3 of Edward Paice's book "Tip & Run: The Untold Tragedy of the Great War in Africa" (2007) ISBN 9 780297 847090
