Battle of Hanna, Mesopotamia 21 January 1916
112 men from the 1st/4th Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment were killed at the Battle of Hanna in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq). In some contemporary sources the battle is called 'Orah Creek'. Included in those killed was Lt Col F J Bowker, their Commanding Officer. A Yateley man, Major William Stilwell then took command of the battalion. "The Hampshires started the day with 16 officers and 339 other ranks. Six officers were killed, six were wounded and one Lieutenant Jack Stilwell [of Yateley] was taken prisoner [by the Turks]. 106 other ranks were killed and 114 were wounded. The battallion was now only fit for 'camp duties and guards'....
