HM Submarine E20
HM Submarine E20
E20 was operating in the Sea of Marmara in November 1915 and was due to rendezvous with the French submarine "Turquoise". Unfortunately, "Turquoise" ran aground under Turkish guns and was hastily abandoned allowing operational plans to be compromised. The German submarine UB14 kept the rendezvous and torpedoed the unsuspecting E20. 21 members of the crew were killed in the attack; a further 9 were captured as PoWs, one of these later dying in captivity. This community remembers all those who served in E20 on her last patrol. (NB: Individual service records give dates of death as 5 Nov 1915, but RN Submarine Museum evidence puts the attack at 1600 on 6th November).
