HM Submarine H6
HM Submarine H6
HM Submarine H6 was built in Canada. On 19 Jan 1916 she ran aground near the Dutch Island of Schiermonnikoog. After unsuccesful attempts to refloat the submarine and before Dutch naval forces arrived, the CO, Lieutenant Robert Stopford, managed to transfer around half his crew, including valuable experienced personnel, to other RN vessels in the vicinity. The CO and the remaining crew were interned in the Netherlands, all crew members surviving. (One of those that avoided internment, second in command Lieut Dudley Ryder, was lost exactly a year later in E36). H6 was subsequently sold to the Dutch and served in the Royal Netherlands Navy as HNLMS O8. She was then scuttled at the start of WW2, but raised by the Germans and commissioned into the German Navy as the training submarine U-D1. She was again scuttled in Kiel harbour in May 1945.
