London Symphony Orchestra

London Symphony Orchestra

The musicians of the London Symphony Orchestra played their part in the First World War in different ways: in the trenches and back at home entertaining those left behind. We hope to be able to tell the story of the contribution made by our musicians and show a little of the part that culture and music has to play in global conflict. We have the following names, given in the minutes of the 1917 AGM and in information from concert programmes and family members, of musicians of the LSO on active service which we are trying to connect to this community and add their stories: William H Reed (1st violin, Leader), Philip Lewis (violin), Edward Carwardine (violin), Horace Ralph (violin), Thomas Peatfield (violin), Edgar Wilby (violin), Robert Carrodus (violin), Bernard Reillie (violin), Sidney Freedman (violin), Joseph Meacham (violin), Arthur Tibbetts (violin), Arthur Ives (violin), Charles Woodhouse (violin), C.Bertram Jones (violin), Frederick Hawkins (violin), David Roy Robertson (violin), Harold Bonarius Grimson (violin), Samuel Bonarius Grimson, Ernest Yonge (viola), Cecil Dorling (viola), Paul Kilburn (viola), Reginald Garnett (viola), Charles Crabb (cello), Arthur Maney (cello), Charles Blackford (cello), Richard Tabb (cello), John Silvester (double bass), Robert Murchie (flute), Frank Almgill (flute), Eli Hudson (flute/piccolo), Henry Nisbet (flute), Edward Augarde (clarinet), Harold Thornton (bassoon), Alexander Penn (horn), Harry Jackson (horn), George Bennett (horn), Ernest Hall (trumpet), Sydney Moxon (trumpet), George Eskdale (trumpet), Edward Garvin (trombone), C.Bertram Lewis (orchestra manager). Are any of these men members of your family? Do you know their service history? Please help us by connecting the names up here to the Lives on this site. Or have you got photos, memories, medals or other information about the men we have already connected below? You can help us to build their stories.
