HM Submarine E41 was acting as surfaced submarine 'target' during an exercise off Harwich on 15 August 1916 when it collided with the dived submarine E4. E41 sank as a result of damage sustained but about half the crew were able to escape. 16 members of the crew drowned. Three of these are buried at St Mary's Shotley; the rest are understood to have been buried at sea. This community remembers all those that served in E41 in August 1916, but only five of the survivors have so far been identified. These include Stoker Petty Officer William Brown who made a remarkable solo escape from E41 through the torpedo loading hatch about 90 minutes after the sinking. The other submarine, E4, was lost with no survivors and these are remembered in community https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/community/5851
