Americans who served in the British Armed Forces
These individuals were American citizens but served with forces of the British Empire and Commonwealth before the USA entered the war in 1917. Because of the Neutrality Act of August 1914, American citizens who wanted to join a foreign force were at risk of expatriation - as a result, many of them changed their identities and claimed that they were from British Empire and Commonwealth nations. These stories were featured in a two-part article entitled 'Britannia's Unruly Stepchildren' by Michael O'Brien, featured in The Western Front Association's Stand To! magazine, nos. 110 and 111.
