Union Bank of Manchester Ltd - Virtual Memorial
Remembering the lives of those who worked for Union Bank of Manchester Ltd., and lost their lives on active service during WW1, or died as a result or WW1 war-related injuries or sickness. The Union Bank of Manchester Ltd merged with the Halifax & District Permanent Banking Company in 1917, and acquired the East Morley & Bradford Deposit Bank Ltd in 1918. It became an affiliated bank within the Barclays group in 1919, when 99% of its capital was acquired under an arrangement whereby Union Bank shareholders were given shares in Barclays to replace their Union Bank shares. The Union Bank continued to be managed and marketed separately until 1940 when it was fully absorbed into Barclays. There appears to be no surviving roll of honour or memorial for the WW1 casualties among the bank's staff, and the casualties are not listed on any of the Barclays Bank memorials, or those of their constituent banks.
